Essence of Pasta

by: Michelle S. Nojadera

We could be able to destruct the essence of pasta and other dishes if we are going to obey the traditional rules we have in cooking. Let's take a read of the following myths.
  • Breaking long pasta into shorter pieces makes it easier to eat. It's really fun to eat the pasta twirling in our mouth and tongue. We admit that it is a challenge in eating pasta.
  • Add olive oil to the cooking water to keep the pasta from sticking. It is better not to eat a sticky one. Pasta isn’t that sticky if it's properly cooked.
  • Throw the pasta against the wall-if it sticks, it's done. All you have to do is just taste it.
  • Rinse pasta after cooking and draining. If you’re going to do this, pasta will be cold and rinse away the starch that helps bind the sauce.
  • It's all about the sauce. Don't put too much sauce in your pasta; you'll not going to taste the classic taste of it.

Trying not to do the traditional way of cooking pasta isn't that bad. If you are going to take these tips you'll know the differences of your old way and new way of cooking pasta. The important thing is you have the goal of giving your family or guests of the best pasta you prepared on them. Let's have the cliché that it's the thought that counts. [via shine.yahoo.com]

Eliminating household toxins in the Kitchen

by: Michelle S. Nojadera

Household cleaners, non-stick coockware, food containers and dishwashers bring toxic chemicals that can we inhale or ingest while having in the kitchen. Because of these chemicals we need to be equipped with the right things to do to avoid having sick from this kind of place.

First, choose safe household cleaners, choose a product that you really know the content. Make sure that you have seen the good and right ingredient that many people may not harm, most especially the children. The EPA categorized "inert" ingredients as causing long-term health damage and harm to the environment. These ingredients include solvents, dispersal agents, dyes and fragrances, some of which can pollute the air and water. Other ingredients that are not mentioned can be carcinogens or worsen health problems like allergies and asthma. You must try your own household cleaner; try hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and vinegar as alternatives.

Lastly, avoid Non-stick cookware. Sad to say that the source of air pollution in your kitchen is coming from your non-stick pots and pans. When heated, they don't give off an odor, even if that is the case, there will still be a problem. There is a toxic chemical in it called PFOA. It can cause cancer, liver damage, growth defects, and immune-system damage. The solution for this is you can use stainless steel, cast iron, ceramic titanium and porcelain enamelled cast iron, or if you still want to use non stick cookware, make sure you use it properly and moderately.

Being careful is the most important thing in doing something. Kitchen supply as food and because of it, we must always be careful of using tools so that we’ll not be having disease through not properly using those tools.

Helpful Kitchen Tools

by: Michelle S. Nojadera

All of us need the right equipment, a few basic techniques, and a handful of recipes to get yourself started. It's not necessary to get every all gadgets in the market. We need equipments with good-quality, durable and essentials.

Take a read of the following important kitchen equipments.

First is a sharp chef's knife. This is one of the most important tools in the kitchen. Make sure that it is comfortable and well-balanced in your hand. Choose a chef’s knife for slicing meats and poultry and for chopping vegetables. A paring knife will be used for smaller, more precise tasks, such as peeling and carving fruits and vegetables, and a serrated knife for slicing bread and tomatoes. Second is the cutting board. This will protect the blades of your knives, prevent the spread of harmful bacteria, and simplify cleanup. You can have plastic and wood to glass. Third is the vegetable peeler. It has many uses, especially in vegetables. A good peeler should have a wide, durable blade, and one with a serrated edge is best with tough-skinned produce. A comfortable, no-slip handle is a must. Fourth is the Immersion blender. It has double or even triple duty, blending soups and smoothies, chopping fruits and vegetables-even whipping egg whites or heavy cream. with a push-button control for continuous or pulsed action.

We can use other useful tools like the following: Steamer basket. Fits into your pots, used to steam vegetables and maintain flavor and nutrients. Tongs are also essential for everything from fishing something out of a pot of boiling water to flipping a steak over on the grill. Have long tongs with a locking mechanism so they stay closed. Tongs made of metal are the strongest and most versatile. Spatulas. Great for gently mixing and blending ingredients and for scraping food from the sides of a bowl. Lastly is the Colander. This is good for draining pastas and rinsing vegetables, the colander needs to withstand both hot and cold temperature extremes. Look for sturdy handles, sloped sides, and holes all over so liquids can drain quickly.

If you are starting to travel your kitchen or even if you are veteran in kitchen tools, try to consider and use the above tools for your convenience.

Vegetables peelers need a sharper life if we want to use them effectively. A good cutting boards may produce a good cut of food, don't use it as if it is our enemy, take a smooth and care way of using it. Kids in the Kitchen? Why not!

by: Michelle S. Nojadera

Kids are the focus of one's home. Parents need ways of having bonding time together with their kids. Nowadays, kitchen is the most used place of having quality time with them, specifically through cooking. In the tradition, kids must not be involved in kitchen since it has so many dangerous utensils needed for cooking and not as toys for them.

There are people who actually involve kids in the kitchen; they have different ways in executing their bonding time. Those are The Spatulatta Sisters, better known as Isabella and Olivia Gerasole, learned to make delicate pizzelle cookies from their grandmother and Hawaiian salads from their mother, and acquired a love of all foods like Italian dishes from their dad. Second is Fieri, who makes pizza and popcorn with his two young sons, urges parents to be cautious with kids in the kitchen but also to give them enough freedom to make the experience meaningful. Third is Barbara Beery, president of the Batter up Kids cooking school in Austin, Texas, said parents need to make sure their children are given age-appropriate tasks that won't be too hard. She said 2-year-olds can scrub food clean, 3-year-olds can put toppings on a pizza or decorate cookies, 4-year-olds can crack eggs over a bowl or spread peanut butter with small spatulas, and 5-year-olds can measure ingredients, stir with spoons or knead dough. Beery suggests that kid-friendly smaller utensils make cooking easier for children. And they enjoy having their own tools. She suggests giving children their own colored sponges and having them wipe up as they go along. Fourth, Tanya Wenman Steel, editor-in-chief of recipe site Epicurious.com and co-author of "Real Food for Healthy Kids," said parents should plan a night for cooking with the children so they aren't trying to jam it on busier days.
She suggests making two or three dishes together on Sunday that can be leftover lunch and dinner the rest of the week. Lastly, She also said setting out a scrap bowl for items like vegetable peels and extra pieces of dough can cut down on messes. Bridget Swinney, a registered dietitian, family eating expert and author of "Baby Bites", a book about feeding babies and toddlers, said children love making dishes that include toppings, such as pizza, tacos or pancakes.

They have different views in bringing kids in the kitchen. This only tells us that if we want kids to grow up industrious and ready for the chores in the kitchen, we must let them do those activities not because we want them to help us but most of all, to teach them and let them learn in advance for the preparation in their independent life in the future.
